Born in Paris, Peter Thellusson’s father was a leading French banker. Thellusson himself came to London in 1762, and was naturalised as an Englishman in the same year. Initially he acted for Dutch and French bankers in London, but later branched out on his own. He was particularly active in the West Indies and acquired large estates there, as well as property in England.
He died in 1797, leaving £100,000 in his will and between £600,000 to £800,000 in trust. In all we reckon he was easily worth £800,000 at his death, around 0.35% of the then £225m net national income. Today that would be over £3.8bn.
