John Hende was a successful and socially ambitious London merchant in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. A draper by trade, Hende reckoned that debts owing to him and his stock of merchandise were worth around £4,000 to £5,000. He had around the same again in land, with manors in Kent and a mill, several manors and a quay in Essex. His income from his London property was put at around £54, six years before his death, while the Kent manors raked in £41 annually.
