  • Giles Loder, an obscure Russian merchant, was based in Old Broad Street in what is now the heart of the modern City. His son became a baronet, while his grandson was ennobled as Lord Wakehurst. His son owned 10,200 acres providing around £11,527 annual income, while Loder himself bought a Northamptonshire estate for £335,000.

Though he left around £2.9m in his will, with his assets and land, he would have been worth around £3.2m, or about £3.7bn in today’s terms.
