George Bowes was one of the largest coal owners in eighteenth century Durham. He formed a cartel with two other prominent coal mining families called the ‘Grand Alliance‘, which dominated the north country coal trade through the century. He was mayor of Durham in 1739, and sat as MP for the county from 1727 to his death in 1760, speaking on behalf of local coal interests.
He left a £600,000 fortune, equivalent to 0.42% of the £140m net national income. In today’s terms, that would be £4.6bn.
