Baron Grey was a younger son of a baron, and on his father’s death in 1323, he inherited the castle of Ruthin, plus lands in Wales and southern England. In the 1340s, he served the king in Scotland and France. He later acted as a commissioner of array for Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, where most of his estates were situated.

Grey died in 1353, with a £10,000 fortune, representing around 0.4% of net national income, or £4.4bn in today’s terms.
